Author Guidelines

We welcome original research, reviews, and perspectives across health data science. JHDS is read by the people building and deploying these systems, so we ask authors to write for a clinical and technical audience at once.

Scope

JHDS publishes work on the methods and practice of using data to improve health, including predictive modeling, machine learning, natural language processing, data governance, equity, and implementation.

Article types and limits

Original Research (up to 4,000 words), Review (up to 6,000), Perspective (up to 2,000), and Brief (up to 1,500). Word limits exclude references, tables, and figures.

Submission checklist

Title page, structured abstract, main text, tables and figures, references, a data and code availability statement, and a conflict-of-interest disclosure.

Peer review

Review is double-anonymized. Authors can expect a first decision in about six weeks.

Reporting standards

Papers describing models must report development, validation, and intended use. We follow recognized reporting guidelines for prediction models and machine learning in health.

Open access

Authors may choose open access. Article processing charges and the available waivers are described during submission.

Ethics

Include IRB or ethics approval where applicable and disclose all conflicts of interest.
